catchup “weekly” digest: I’m not dead, promise
the very little that happened at Flick Filosopher from Monday, March 11, to Sunday, April 7
Oh god, it’s been a month since I did a Weekly Digest. I’ll really embarrassed and I’m so sorry.
Anyway, I’m not dead and I’m back.

PS: A reminder that here at Substack, you have total control over which emails from me you want to receive. Simply go to your Substack account settings, then My Subscriptions > Flick Filosopher > Edit > Email notifications. Here you can uncheck whichever bits you don’t want to receive by email. Like, you could uncheck “Weekly Digest” if that’s redundant, because you’re getting the individual posts. Or maybe you only want “Latest Reviews.” It’s up to you! (No matter what email settings you choose, you can always read stuff at the Flick Filosopher Substack site or in the Substack app. Or, of course, at the Flick Filosopher home base.)

Wicked Little Letters movie review: the cheek is in the mail
An upending of the period costume drama that’s cheerfully indecent, gloriously naughty, and full of female rage at the expectations women operate under. Funny as hell and bursting with impudent energy. [read the review | cinemas US/UK]
Loaded Question taking a break for a while
Those posts haven’t been getting much engagement, so I think it’s best to stop beating this dead horse. [read more]
curated cinema: a previous trip to Arrakis
1984’s Dune leaves UK Mubi in 6 days (ETA: it’s now gone, sorry); it’s streaming on Max in the US. [read more]
what I’m watching and bingeing
3 Body Problem [Netflix globally]: binged the first season, and I loved it; terrific adaptation of a challenging novel about an unusual alien invasion; there are moments here that are profoundly shocking; can’t wait for more
Sugar [Apple TV+ globally]: I have now finished this series (thanks to advanced press screeners) and can’t say much because you should discover its secrets for yourself; it’s a slow burn, but know that Colin Farrell as a private detective in a modern Los Angeles crime noir was probably never not going to be amazing
The X-Files [Hulu US/Disney+ UK]: almost done with S1 — so many episodes! — and loving it once again. I can’t sum up my joy any better than Clara on Twitter:
Slow Horses S2 [Apple TV+ globally]: still haven’t gotten back to this…
coming up at Flick Filosopher…

Paleolithic thriller Out of Darkness
Andrew Scott in All of Us Strangers
the absolutely brutal The Zone of Interest
Paul Giamatti in Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers
Wonka, finally

Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore in May December
Priscilla’s problematic romance with Elvis
