a French drama draws back a curtain of secrecy...
the few things that happened at Flick Filosopher between Monday, February 8th, and Sunday, February 14th, 2021
Another slow week chez Flick Filosopher, as I continue to struggle mightily with lockdown. Anecdotally, it seems that many people here in the UK are having a much harder time with this lockdown than our two previous ones. Even when restrictions were lifted somewhat over the summer, I still barely left my house or saw friends or family. So I’m coming up on a full year of what feels to me like a kind of sensory deprivation, and it’s really weighing on me. I simultaneously am bursting with ambition to do so many things and having a lot of difficulty mustering up the motivation to actually do any of it.
But I will try again this week…

Slalom movie review: the obstacle courses a girl runs
A fictional version of a story we know in the abstract, told with hushed reserve and brutal unsentimentality. An incisive, nontitillating female gaze on sexual abuse that never sensationalizes horror. [read the review | streaming UK, see review for link; coming to US in spring]
