daily scream: haunted, and haunting...
2001’s *The Others* is on Prime and Apple TV on both sides of the Atlantic (and a few other services as well)
The Daily Stream becomes the Daily Scream for spooky season!
A great ghost story is always welcome at Halloween. One of the very best of recent vintage is 2001’s The Others, in which Nicole Kidman and her two young children are holed up in a mist-shrouded manor on Jersey in the Channel Islands, in 1945. The horrors of the war loom, of course, but so does something else.…
This is classy gothic horror, old-fashioned in the best way: there are no CGI specters, just mysterious footsteps and distant cries and movement in the shadows and hushed whispers and slamming doors. Writer-director Alejandro Amenábar creates effectively spooky visual atmosphere, but he also messes with our heads, making us question our own reactions to what we’re seeing in much the same way that Kidman’s increasingly creeped-out Grace does. Few similar films are as memorably, well, haunting as this one. (Read my 2001 review.)
