daily stream: a crime noir Outback Western
2014’s *Mystery Road* is streaming on Prime in the US, and on BFI Player in the UK
What’s a movie that’s full of clichés but doesn’t feel like it? How about the 2014 Australian flick Mystery Road? I can still feel the distinct thrill I got watching this at London Film Festival the year before, at how well writer-director Ivan Sen pulled off something that far too many other lazy movies convince you is impossible: making the familiar fresh and exciting. Detective Jay Swan (Aussie TV star Aaron Pedersen) is yer basic delicious handsome angsty wounded taciturn cop with a troubled past who’s only trying to do his job, dammit, while being dogged by suspicions that his probably-corrupt higher-ups are stonewalling him. Sen brings an Outback Western vibe to this modern noir, as well as a lot of dry humor and elegant action. (Read my 2013 LFF review.)
US: stream on Prime; rent/buy at Prime and Apple TV
UK: stream on BFI Player (via Prime); rent/buy at Prime and Apple TV
