daily stream: a Hollywood satire that avoids easy laughs
2006’s *For Your Consideration* is on Prime and Apple TV on both sides of the Atlantic
It’s a Christopher Guest jape full of all his usual merry pranksters, and it’s doubly seasonal right now: 2006’s For Your Consideration follows the production of a prestige boutique-studio drama called Home for Purim as they get wind of a rumor that the movie may be headed for Oscar glory. (Purim is a Jewish holiday that starts tonight. The Academy Award ceremony takes place next Sunday night.) There’s plenty of comedy here, of course, but much of it is, as the saying goes, not very pretty. Guest skips his usual mockumentary format here in favor of a straight-up narrative with a more oblique angle on his subjects — insecure actors, bimbo fluff journalists, producers who want to dumb everything down — that highlights the underlying pathos. Peeking in from the side, fly-on-the-wall style, we suddenly see the self-awareness, the hidden desperation, the happy face that falls away for a sadder one when the cameras are switched off. (Read my 2006 review.)
