daily stream: a quirky western that robustly smashes toxic masculinity
2018’s *The Sisters Brothers* is on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Prime in the US
One of my favorite underappreciated films of recent vintage is 2018’s woefully overlooked The Sisters Brothers, the first English-language movie from French filmmaker Jacques Audiard. This quirky crime drama, set in 1850s America, pits brother assassins (John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix) against the private detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) and the inventor (Riz Ahmed) who’ve teamed up on a very intriguing quest. Western-genre clichés of men as rough, damaged, and spreading their pain around get a thorough kicking, though not always in expected ways. Incredible performances all around, too.
US: rent on Prime; rent/buy on Apple TV
UK: stream on BBC iPlayer through March 28th; rent/buy on Prime and Apple TV
