daily stream: a rare genuine onscreen everywoman
2002’s *My Big Fat Greek Wedding* is on Max in the US, ITVx in the UK
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 opens in cinemas on both sides of the Atlantic tomorrow. I plan to see it, though I expect nothing more than another halfhearted retread like 2016’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. (Happy to be wrong about that, of course!) Which would be a shame — again — because the original, 2002’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding, is delightful. Nia Vardalos’s Toula is the sort of genuine everywoman who is rare in movies, and her romance with dishy John Corbett’s Ian offers the validation that ordinary guys get onscreen all the time, and women almost never: that we don’t have to be size 2 supermodels for a nice, decent, handsome guy to find us irresistible. This is a sweet story about a young woman coming out of her shell and finding herself in a way that her loving but overbearing family hadn’t allowed her to do before. (Read my 2002 review.)
