daily stream: essential background for understanding Ukraine's backbone
2015’s *Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom* is streaming globally on Netflix
Today is the first anniversary of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. But this war has been going on for a lot longer than a year. It’s been nine years since Russia invaded and annexed Crimea — a region of Ukraine — immediately after a brief flowering of revolution in Ukraine ousted its president, Viktor Yanukovych, in the wake of his refusal to align the nation closer with the European Union. In 2015’s Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom, a 2016 Oscar nominee, Russian-born, Los Angeles–based filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky gives us some absolutely essential background for understanding what is happening there now. This is what a revolution in the 21st century looks like, with cell-phone charging stations for protesters and online journalists ensuring that if international mainstream media won’t pay much attention, the Internet certainly will. And surely this is a prequel to what the inevitable documentary about the ongoing invasion will look like.
