daily stream: food and wine and the projects that sustain a gal
2009’s *Julie & Julia* is on Netflix and Hulu in the US; on Prime and Apple TV in the UK
It’s a cold, damp February day and I’ve got a stonking head cold, so I want a comfort movie to cheer me up. I can’t think of a better one at this moment than the delightful 2009 flick Julie & Julia, a cinematic pas de deux about two real-life women whose paths never cross yet who are deeply sympatico (even though one of them actually denied that). In postwar Europe and later back in the US, Julia Child (Meryl Streep) amuses herself by learning French cooking and then writing what would become a classic cookbook. In post-9/11 New York, Julie Powell (Amy Adams) amuses herself by cooking her way through that classic cookbook over the course of a year, and blogging about it. The doubt and the delight they experience as their projects take wild swings of success and failure are mirrored in the giddily joyful performances of Adams and Streep: spending time with them is like spending time with the kind of friends who support you and love you no matter what. I adore this movie. (Read my 2009 review.)
