daily stream: get your recommended daily allowance of Mads Mikkelsen
2021’s *Riders of Justice* is new on Hulu in the US, and streaming on Sky/Now in the UK
I am done with movies about men driven to vengeance by the deaths of women they love. But I’ve forgiven 2021’s Danish black-comedy thriller Riders of Justice for deploying this tired cliché because it upends the trope in a way that is so vital and so necessary. And it does so slyly, patiently, and with much grim humor along the way. After the wife of Mads Mikkelsen’s career soldier is killed in a train crash, Nikolaj Lie Kaas’s statistician comes to him to say that math and science have proven who is responsible, so why not hunt down the perpetrators? Writer-director Anders Thomas Jensen has crafted a sneakily brilliant deconstruction of how we cope — or don’t — with grief, of what drives us to displace remorse and shame, and why all of that can lead to terrible things, particularly as depicted in, well, less self-aware movies than this one. (Read my 2021 review.)
