daily stream: good friends help you move bodies
2020’s *Blow the Man Down* is streaming on Prime US/UK
Trying something new for 2023: Daily Stream, a really good and/or really fun flick you may have missed, or forgotten about, that’s available somewhere to stream. I’ll try to find ones that are both US and UK, but that might not always be possible. Free for all subscribers, but if you like this, upgrading to paid will encourage me to keep it up!
I’ll also be posting these to Patreon, Twitter, Mastodon, Post, and Facebook, if you’d prefer to get them at one of those services, and I’ll do a once-a-week roundup post at the Flick Filosopher web site. (See below for instructions for turning these particular emails off here at Substack.)
The blustery wind may have a bite to it on a frigid January day, but that’s nothing to the ironic sting of 2020’s Blow the Man Down, a quietly savage, weirdly funny feminist take on crime noir that is ferocious in a way that only slowly reveals itself. In a cold winter in a Maine fishing village, a group of women, young and old, attempt to manage — to survive — the crimes and misdemeanors of men. There are dead bodies here, literal and figurative, but the question of “Who did this murder?” is a lot more intricate and complicated than even this twisty genre has trained us to expect. Conflict and compassion wax and wane in thorny knots of competing motives and pragmatic morality: the mystery here is never quite what it seems. (Read my review.)
