daily stream: hey you guys! ‘The Goonies’ expires from UK Prime in 10 days!
1985’s *The Goonies* is also for rent and sale on Prime & Apple TV in the US and UK
Trying something new for 2023: Daily Stream, a really good and/or really fun flick you may have missed, or forgotten about, that’s available somewhere to stream. I’ll try to find ones that are both US and UK, but that might not always be possible. Free for all subscribers, but if you like this, upgrading to paid will encourage me to keep it up!
I’ll also be posting these to Patreon, Twitter, Mastodon, Post, and Facebook, if you’d prefer to get them at one of those services, and I’ll do a once-a-week roundup post at the Flick Filosopher web site. (See below for instructions for turning these particular emails off here at Substack.)
Everyone is talking, and rightly so, about Ke Huy Quan’s very welcome return to our screens in Everything Everywhere All at Once. (I’ll try to review this soon, finally, I promise! Spoiler: I loved it.) He’s won a TON of well-deserved Best Supporting Actor awards for his performance, including from the Critics Choice Awards, the National Society of Film Critics, and lots of critics’ organizations including the Alliance of Women Film Journalists, of which I am a voting member; he’s also nominated by the Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA, and the Online Film Critics Society [I’m a voting member], which have yet to name winners.
In all the chatter, I’ve seen lots of reference to his delightful turn as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom but very few to his appearance in that other blockbuster of old, The Goonies. As the nerdy inventor Data, Huy Quan was part of a gang of tween besties on a comic treasure-hunt adventure; the movie has been a GenX cult favorite ever since. Did I sit in an 80s multiplex munching popcorn and grinning like an idiot watching The Goonies? Yup. Have I seen The Goonies recently? Nope. Am I going to revisit it again soon? You bet.
US: rent/buy on Prime and Apple TV

loved this one growing up, and also was so, so happy to see Ke Huy Quan in EEAAO; his performance was touching and sincere as well as bonkers and I am so happy for the recognition he is receiving!
