daily stream: Keira Knightley gets the royal treatment...
2008’s *The Duchess* is available at lots of services US/UK
Trying something new for 2023: Daily Stream, a really good and/or really fun flick you may have missed, or forgotten about, that’s available somewhere to stream. I’ll try to find ones that are both US and UK, but that might not always be possible. Free for all subscribers, but if you like this, upgrading to paid will encourage me to keep it up!
I’ll also be posting these to Patreon, Twitter, Mastodon, Post, and Facebook, if you’d prefer to get them at one of those services, and I’ll do a once-a-week roundup post at the Flick Filosopher web site. (See below for instructions for turning these particular emails off here at Substack.)
While we wait to see how kind this awards season is to Vicky Krieps as the 19th-century Empress Elisabeth of Austria in the snarky up-the-monarchy costume drama Corsage, 2008’s The Duchess offers similar, if more mainstream, fun. Keira Knightley is delicious as the Princess Diana of her day — she was, in fact, Di’s 18th-century ancestor. Married to a man who did not love her, she made a life for herself, cavorting with playwrights and politicians, inventing her own fashions, and generally being all-around fabulous. The terrific cast also include Ralph Fiennes (currently seen in The Menu) as the cold-fish duke, Dominic Cooper, Charlotte Rampling, and Hayley Atwell. Read my review.
