daily stream: smashing stereotypes in Palestinian courtrooms
2018 documentary *The Judge* is on Prime and Apple TV on both sides of the Atlantic
This week I’m sharing films from and about Palestine and depicting Palestinian perspectives. Free Palestine!
Here is a documentary portrait as delightful as its subject. 2018’s The Judge, from American filmmaker Erika Cohn, introduces us to Kholoud Al-Faqih, the first female judge in Palestine’s family courts. A pioneer of Islamic jurisprudence and as fiery as any Western feminist, she’s smashing stereotypes not only for Western audiences but in her own culture as well, just by going about her day. But this is an essential eye-opener for Western viewers in another way, for it depicts a side of an Islamic society that we in the West do not often see, the one where the same conversation between tradition and change that is occurring in the West is also happening. Spoiler: progress is winning.
