daily stream: the best-ever Star Trek movie (that isn’t a Star Trek movie)
1999’s *Galaxy Quest* is back on US Netflix after a six-year absence; on Prime and Apple TV in the UK
By Grabthar’s Hammer, 1999’s Galaxy Quest is as fine an instance of fan service that has ever fan-serviced for a fandom that doesn’t even exist. This glorious science-fiction comedy — one of the movies that made 1999 perhaps the best overall year for movies since 1939 — is pitch perfect in its simultaneous skewering of sci-fi nerdery, very particularly of the Star Trek persuasion, and its embracing of fandom as a thing of, in its choice iterations, gentle tribalism of the best kind. The desperate alien Thermians, who come to Earth seeking out help under the misapprehension that Earth broadcasts of a cheesy TV sci-fi show leaking out into space are “historical documents” are the most impossibly sweet, most ridiculously earnest dork fans ever. I love this movie with all my geeky heart. (Read my 1999 review.)
