2018’s *Shoplifters* is streaming on US Prime and on All4 in the UK, but is leaving both services soon
I adore Hirokazu Kore-eda’s films: they are so simple, so human, so profound, and so heartbreaking. (I haven’t seen his latest, Broker, yet, but it’s high on my to-watch list. It’s currently in limited theatrical release in the US, and opens in UK cinemas later this month.) Excellent starting points for jumping into his work are 2005’s Nobody Knows, 2013’s Like Father, Like Son, or today’s recommendation, 2018’s Shoplifters. Kore-eda won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival that year for this masterful portrait of a family struggling to get by in Tokyo and resorting to theft to feed themselves. The secrets they are hiding, which the filmmaker reveals with slow, deliberate care, prompt us to question how we define family, and whether we look to the right qualities when thinking about it. Like all of Kore-eda’s work, this is a beautiful film, and a haunting one.
