daily stream: the true tale of journalist Maria Ressa's battle against authoritarianism
2020 documentary *A Thousand Cuts* is available in the US but not, alas, in the UK
Trying something new for 2023: Daily Stream, a really good and/or really fun flick you may have missed, or forgotten about, that’s available somewhere to stream. I’ll try to find ones that are both US and UK, but that might not always be possible. Free for all subscribers, but if you like this, upgrading to paid will encourage me to keep it up!
I’ll also be posting these to Patreon, Twitter, Mastodon, Post, and Facebook, if you’d prefer to get them at one of those services, and I’ll do a once-a-week roundup post at the Flick Filosopher web site. (See below for instructions for turning these particular emails off here at Substack.)
You may have heard the news today Filipino journalist Maria Ressa has been acquitted in Manila of tax-evasion charges that were almost certainly politically motivated, retribution for her longtime work investigating the abuses and corruption in the authoritarian administration of former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte. The brilliant the 2020 documentary A Thousand Cuts chronicles her journalistic odyssey, via her muckraking news outlet Rappler, against the murderous anti-democracy forces in the Philippines. The film is both horror story and cautionary tale for the United States, the United Kingdom, and other nations succumbing to far-right nationalism, awash in fake news, and facing increasing limitations on free speech. Ressa won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 for her “efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.” We must take a lesson from her and hope, as we fight back, that we can divert ourselves from a similar path.
