daily scream: this ultimate horror movie works on levels you didn’t even know existed
2012’s *The Cabin in the Woods* is on Max in the US, Sky Cinema in the UK (and lots of other services!)
The Daily Stream becomes the Daily Scream for spooky season!
If you’ve somehow managed to avoid learning the secrets of 2012’s The Cabin in the Woods, then go into it retaining as much of that ignorance as you can. (If you haven’t been able to avoid its secrets or you’ve already seen the movie, that’s okay, too, because this one rewards multiple viewings.) Drew Goddard, creator of the TV series Lost, gifts us with an absolutely genius flick that is as strange and as twisted as you’d expect, given that previous work. This is a meta horror. It is all horror movies rolled into one. It is deeply terrifying and uncomfortably funny. It returns to the ancient, atavistic terrors that have been fueling scary stories since forever and updates them in a way that feeds on uniquely modern ideas about such seemingly diverse notions as religion and bureaucracy. I am so very jealous of anyone who still has the thrilling pleasure of discovering its mysteries to look forward to. (Read my spoiler-free 2012 review.)
