daily stream: what is war good for? profit! (say it again)
2005’s *Lord of War* leaves HBO Max in the US on Feb 28; on Netflix in the UK
As we approach the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, let’s look back a generation at a previous bout of chaos… one that led to where we are now. Andrew Niccol’s 2005 satire Lord of War follows Nicolas Cage’s Ukrainian arms dealer in the 1980s and 90s as, among other crimes, he middlemans the fire sale of billions of dollars worth of Soviet munitions in Ukraine after the downfall of the USSR. Cage’s character is fictional, but this is all based on fact, and it’s very laugh-until-you-cry. It’s funny in the same way that you often can’t tell anymore whether a shocking headline is from The New York Times or The Onion. (Read my 2005 review.)
US: stream on HBO Max (via Prime) through February 28; rent/buy on Prime and Apple TV
