daily stream: when family ties become a long con
2020’s *Kajillionaire* leaves UK Netflix soon; on Prime and Apple TV in the US
After debuting at Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, the weirdly wonderful Kajillionaire suffered the fate of many a film that year: it got lost in the pandemic. Writer-director Miranda July turns the heist movie upside down with her family of oddball con artists (Richard Jenkins, Debra Winger, and Evan Rachel Wood) who find themselves under emotional siege when they take on a new partner (Gina Rodriguez) who ends up challenging everything about their lives. This is an often surreal and strangely poignant meditation on capitalism, connection, and whether family itself is the ultimate con.
US: rent/buy on Prime and Apple TV
UK: streaming on Netflix through March 8th; rent/buy on Prime and Apple TV
