she is Wonder Woman, hear her roar...
everything that happened at Flick Filosopher between Monday, January 11th, and Sunday, January 17th, 2021
Hello, lovely reader. And happy Blue Monday. Which isn’t even really a thing:
(How much of our culture was invented by marketing people as a way to sell us crap we don’t need? I feel like it’s too much…)
Anyway, every day is pretty blue for me lately. I mean, I say above “everything that happened at Flick Filosopher…” but that’s almost nothing, as you’ll see below. (And no, you didn’t miss an email last week: I posted absolutely nothing at the site last week.) As I feel like I have been saying constantly for many months now, I have been finding it deeply difficult to concentrate, to do any real writing, what with America collapsing in real time on live television and a deadly virus laying low once-mighty nations (my homeland of the US, my current home of the UK) solely because of the utter incompetence of their useless leaders.
But — as I’ve also said before — I feel like I have gotten new wind in my sails this week, and I hope I can continue to take advantage of that. (In recent months, that sort of feeling has been too fleeting when it has deigned to visit me at all.) For one big-ish thing, you’re getting a sneak preview of the design refresh I am planning for Flick Filosopher: see the logo above if you’re reading this in email, or in case you’re looking at this on Substack, right here:
This might change, slightly, as I figure out how to make it all work, but I don’t thing it will change much. It’s simple, but I’m rather pleased with it. (FYI, I was inspired by Pantone’s colors of the year for 2021. I like the balance of optimism tempered by practicality. And yes, the font is different, too: It’s Gacor, by Din Studio.)
The site hasn’t had a refresh since May 2013, almost eight years, and there are some technical issues on the backend that need to be dealt with, so it’s a matter of technical necessity, too, and I might as well bring the aesthetics along at the same time. I hope to get the site redone in the next month or two… and for some reason, that sort of work doesn’t seem to take a hit when I’m depressed and anxious over the state of the world.
Yup, that’s right: I do it all at Flick Filosopher. The writing, the design, the promotion, the technical stuff. I dream of a time when the site brings in so much money that I can offload everything that isn’t writing. Maybe in 2021…

Wonder Woman 1984 movie review: days of future past [pictured]
The retro pastel optimism is ironic, but the dark stuff slips by in subtext. This bold, colorful tale, recalling classic superhero films, could be happening in a parallel universe… a much nicer one. [read the review]
