two very different Movies for the Resistance
the few things that happened at Flick Filosopher between Monday, February 15th, and Sunday, February 21st, 2021
Hello, lovely readers!
I have two new reviews for you this week. And both are part of my Movies for the Resistance series, films that reflect the revolutionary spirit we will need to transform our broken world. There are plenty of current and classic films on the list, if you’re in need of some inspiration and optimism. There’s so much we need to fix, from the broken climate to our broken economy, just for starters. I’ll be focusing on some of these issues and the movies that deal with them in roundup essays that will be among the first installments of the paid Substack newsletter, debuting soon.
The first one will be free — look for it this week.
I’ve decided that my Substack presence will not replace my Patreon but will supplement it, so if you’re already supporting my work on Patreon, you won’t need to move your subscription, because you’ll be able to access all my stuff over there. (I’ll post those roundup essays, for instance, over at Patreon as well as here.) If you prefer a more curated experience, I’d suggest signing up for the paid Substack once that goes live.
I hope this won’t get too confusing! It’s just that Substack and Patreon seem to serve somewhat different purposes, and are aimed at different types of Internet users, and I suddenly realized that I don’t need to forgo the benefits of one for the other — I can use both. I will do my best to continually make it clear what is happening on both platforms, so that you can best decide how you want to read my stuff.
Have a great week!

Irresistible movie review: are money and politics irretrievably entwined?
This zingy satire is so perfectly, beautifully Jon Stewart (its writer and director): big and brash, raging with fury at the state of American politics but also underlain with hope that it might be changed for the better. [read the review | streaming US/Can/UK, see review for links]

Cowboys movie review: a new kind of father-and-son tale [pictured]
A complete upending of the Western, about not wide open spaces but close-in intimacy, with an unusual female gaze and a hugely provocative dare to gender expectations. Both ironic and transformative.
