weekly digest: a movie about a girl, and a girl (me!) about movies
everything that happened at Flick Filosopher from Monday, August 28, to Sunday, September 3
I can’t believe it’s September already. This year is just disappearing, and I feel like I missed so much of it being caught up in my own personal bullshit.
But cooler weather and the autumn movies season will reinvigorate me. I’ve gotten accredited for London Film Festival and am very much looking forward to the film orgy that always is. (I will be masked up in all in-person screenings, of course!) I’m working on getting my mobility back and getting back into shape after many months of extremely limited physical activity.
It’s almost record-breakingly hot in London today — 84 degrees Fahrenheit! — but pumpkin spice lattes and Oscar bait are just around the corner…

Scrapper movie review: girlhood interrupted [pictured]
A singular portrait of a girl full of verve and personality. An astonishing feature debut from Charlotte Regan, with a film as cheeky and imaginative, as pleasantly messy and chaotic, as its heroine. [read the review | cinemas US/UK]
loaded question: what bit of pop culture (movies, TV, books, comics, games, whatever) best captures the feeling of being disconnected with the larger world?
I’m thinking about Cory Doctorow’s 2004 novel Eastern Standard Tribe, which speaks to me as an American ex-pat (from the US Eastern time zone) who still has not fully settled into UK time… [reply at Flick Filosopher | reply at Substack | reply at Patreon]

Good Omens S2 [Prime US, UK, and globally]: yay, more time to spend with Crowley and Aziraphale! the chemistry between David Tennant and Michael Sheen is among the most delicious, most palpable I’ve ever seen on any screen, big or small; a sheer delight

I want to second Jess’ comment; no need for you to end your roundups on an apology, you have nothing to apologize for and I get such joy out of reading what you’re up to! I’m thrilled for you to begoing to the London Film Fest and look forward to hearing about what you’re seeing.
And I am especially thrilled you’re watching Good Omens season 2; my brainrot lives in this fandom, and Sheen and Tennant are just incredible individually and together.
Can I make a suggestion? You always end these roundups with an “I’m sorry” and a frowny face...it’s such a bummer way to cap off a summary of all the cool stuff you’ve gotten done and is so unnecessary. We’re grateful for you...please be kinder to yourself! 😌
