weekly digest: an intense new French drama depicts the history about to repeat itself
everything that happened at Flick Filosopher from Monday, May 2nd, to Sunday, May 8th
As I noted recently I would be doing, I’ve started reworking how the paid version of the Flick Filosopher Substack works. Up first: the Weekend Watchlist emails/posts are now exclusive for 30 days for paid subscribers, which means that a month after I create them, they will be mailed to everyone on the free side, and also be unlocked here at Substack. (Those posts will, at same time, be made free on my Patreon, and will also post for all to read at FlickFilosopher.com.)
Those getting the Weekend Watchlists free 30 days later will note that sometimes, movies recommended in them are about to expire on Netflix or Amazon Prime, so it may be too late to take advantage of those streaming opportunities. I hope this will encourage you to become a paid subscriber if you are in a position to do so.
As a paid subscriber, you also get all my latest reviews directly in your email in-box (and also on the Substack app, if you prefer that). Those reviews are also available on Flick Filosopher for all to read, but I’m glad to be able to offer the email/app version for those who prefer to read that way.
If there is something you would like to see me offer paid subscribers, please do let me know! I’m eager for new ideas about how I can give you more of what you want.
Thank you for your support!

Happening (L’événement) movie review: the history about to repeat itself
An intense, intimate tale of historical illegal abortion, with a central performance of focused terror; a harrowing body horror that looms again. I cannot overstate the absolute urgency of this film. [read the review | cinemas US/UK]
loaded question: what are your favorite movies that mess with time?
In honor of me being all temporally discombobulated because yesterday was a holiday here in the UK, so even though it’s Tuesday, it feels like Monday. [reply at Flick Filosopher | reply at Substack | reply at Patreon]
what I’m bingeing
Call My Agent! Season 3 [Netflix globally except in Austria, Spain, Germany, and Portugal, for some reason]: snuck in another episode; I love how this keeps going in directions I didn’t expect, and how episodes end on cliffhangers I didn’t see coming
Picard Season 2 [Paramount+ US; Amazon Prime UK]: finished! so not a fan of this season — too much filler and treading water to get nowhere terrible interesting — but I do love how it has three major female characters all played by actors in their 50s; more like that, at least, please
Moon Knight [Disney+]: finished! still not sure how much of it was all in poor Oscar Isaac’s head, but that’s okay; what a tour-de-force performance by him!
Bridgerton Season 2 [Netflix globally]: caught a few more episodes; sounds like damning with faint praise, but I’m loving how unchallenging this is; nice for vegging out with
Old Enough! [Netflix US/UK/maybe other regions?]: watched a few more of these very short episodes; this remains the cutest thing I see all week
