weekly digest: in which I knock the cabin movie
the little bit that happened at Flick Filosopher from Monday, February 20, to Sunday, February 26
Well, I predicted that Knock at the Cabin would be available on premium VOD before the end of February, and I was correct (at least for the US). Annual box-office takings in the US were still way down in 2022, even with so many people pretending that the pandemic is over and things are “normal” again. So I guess this is our new reality: just wait a little bit and you’ll be able see almost any movie at home.
Bit sad, really, but I’m still trying to dodge the virus as much as possible so I’m good with this for now…

Knock at the Cabin movie review: there appears to be an apocalypse happening [pictured]
There is only one thing worse than an M. Night Shyamalan movie with a twist ending. And that is one without a twist ending. Feels like a faith-based movie trying to sneak in under a disingenuous wire. [read the review | cinemas US/UK; premium VOD US]
loaded question: what are some positive, definitely not evil, hopefully useful and creative uses for AI?
From deepfake porn to “art” that infringes on the work of actual humans, artificial intelligence, as it exists at the moment is not making a very good argument for itself. Can we brainstorm a better future? [reply at Flick Filosopher | reply at Substack | reply at Patreon]
what I’m bingeing
The Last of Us [HBO Max US, Sky/Now UK]: it’s not as good as Station Eleven, but it’s pretty darn enjoyable (for dark values of enjoyable)
Old Enough! [Netflix globally]: continues to be very cute
His Dark Materials [HBO Max US/BBC iPlayer UK]: finished Season 3, which has a very definitive ending so I’m presuming that’s the end of it (unless they go on to adapt Pullman’s followup trilogy); liked this a lot; Dafne Keen is a major talent
Picard [Paramount+ US (via Prime)/Prime UK]: just started Season 3; looks like it’s gonna be a nostalgia-fest, with the return of Riker and Crusher; I have no problem with that
