weekly digest: two movies take us into the past, when everyone knew their place...
everything that happened at Flick Filosopher from Monday, April 25th, to Sunday, May 1st
Happy Tuesday! It is Tuesday, isn’t it? Yes, it is. It only feels like Monday to me because yesterday was a bank holiday in the UK. I am trying to be better about carving out just a little bit of downtime for myself, which is so hard when you work for yourself. Taking a day off when it’s not also a holiday in the US, where I know many of you are, is even more difficult for me.
Anyway: day off (mostly) achieved, which is why I didn’t do my usual Monday stuff, like send out this newsletter. (When I can’t manage to get it out on Sunday, that is, which I always do intend to do. *sigh*)
However your week is starting, I hope it’s a good one.

Downton Abbey: A New Era movie review: should we improve society somewhat, or nah?
Steady your heart palpitations: it’s the same old era for the nicest feudal hangover. The delusional reactionary fantasy of wealth and privilege for some, cheerful servitude for others remains intact. [read the review | UK cinemas now, US May 20th]
The Yellow Wallpaper movie review: gaslight but no heat
Stiflingly literal mounting of the classic feminist tale. Flat and stilted, with no cultural context and no visceral insight into its protagonist’s plight, and emptiness where there should be empathy. [read the review | US VOD now]
