weekly digest: Ukrainian drama ‘Olga’ gets a fundraising UK release...
everything that happened at Flick Filosopher from Monday, March 14th, to Sunday, March 20th
In last week’s Weekly Digest, I asked you whether you’d like to get my full reviews by email and/or app via Substack or Patreon, as a bonus for paying supporters. (I also asked this in a post at Flick Filosopher.) The poll results were split almost exactly between “yes” and “no,” so with this past week’s review of Olga, I started an experiment doing just that, to see if it will help drum up more paying support. See that review at Substack, Patreon, and of course at Flick Filosopher.
If you’re a Patreon patron or a paying Substack subscriber, and you’ve configured your subscription to receive emails, you should have gotten that full review as an email, too. The review is also readable in the Substack app (download here) or the Patreon app (download here).
Formatting a review for multiple platforms does mean more work for me, but I’m happy to do it if — big if — it draws in more paying subscribers. So we’ll see how that goes. I’m not too proud to say that I’m pretty desperate to boost my income for my criticism work, so please do consider subscribing, either at Substack or Patreon (bonuses are the same at both platforms), if you are able to. Thank you.
And, as always, a huge thank you to those already subscribing. Thank you!

weekend watchlist: where to stream (almost) every Oscar nominee
In the run-up to the ceremony on Sunday, March 27th, you can watch almost every film that’s been nominated from the comfort of your sofa. Very handy if you’re participating in an Oscar pool. [read more]
Olga movie review: coming out swinging for Ukraine
Poignant, pointed drama about a teenage Ukrainian gymnast fuses the personal and the political in a portrait of the spirit of Ukraine that is now being tested in the worst way. Incredibly affecting. [read the review | cinemas UK]
would you like to receive my reviews by email or in an app?
This would be a bonus feature for my Patreon patrons and paying Substack subscribers (with the reviews still also appearing here at Flick Filosopher). Please vote to let me know what you think! [read more]
loaded question: how much do Oscar nominations or wins affect your desire to see a film?
Do you pay attention to and seek out the nominees and winners, or does love from the Oscars make little difference to your decision (or not) to view a film? Is there any awards love that you do sit up and take notice of? [reply at Flick Filosopher | reply at Substack | reply at Patreon]
