women talking to ourselves... and a wake-up call for Hollywood?
the few things that happened at Flick Filosopher between Monday, March 8th, and Sunday, March 14th, 2021
The Oscar nominations for the strangest movie year of my lifetime — and probably that of almost everyone alive today — have just been announced, and while I have yet to take a deep dive into them, one thing comes through loud and clear: women and people of color have made a strong showing, at last, across virtually all categories.
Why is that? What is it about a year with plenty of movies but almost no actual cinemagoing that has allowed previously underappreciated artists to be seen and heard? Should we take it as an indictment of The Movies — of Hollywood and the industry — that something we might generally consider fundamental to the artform, that in-the-dark, big-screen experience, has apparently been drowning out the voices of so many filmmakers and performers?
All us critics and journalists and ordinary film fans are just started to think about this, and I’m sure there will be many varied — and probably sometimes contradictory — opinions. I just hope that, as with so many other aspects of our lives as we *fingers crossed* begin to open the world back up again, we find a better “new normal” instead of going back to the old status quo.

Mouthpiece movie review: women, arguing with ourselves [pictured]
The internal monologue that modern women have with ourselves gets externalized in this audacious and absolutely brilliant dramedy. Poignant, vulnerable, and almost shocking, in the best possible way. [read the review | streaming US/Can/UK, see review for links]
