I’ve been teasing this for a while, and it’s finally here: a new section at Flick Filosopher examining science fiction films of the 21st century, now that we’re, you know, living in science-fictional times.
The early categorization kinda verifies a general feeling I've had. There's been a fair amount of new SF out there, but not much that I personally get excited about. For instance, I haven't had much interest in further explorations of AI since... the movie *AI*, more or less? And apocalypses and infections are too depressing. And there are only three in the "Optimistic" category (two of which I adore, and I guess I need to catch The Midnight Special....)
As for AI, there *are* some different takes out there. (That will be true of all the themes -- there are fresh things to be said, but we have to seek them out.) If you haven't seen *After Yang* yet, give it a try. It's wonderful, and not like anything we've seen before. (I must review it soon.)
I love this as an organizing motif. Exciting!
*blush*

I hope I can find some more Optimistic movies!
