I had no idea that Sebastian Stan was from Romania until now! That reminds me of an odd question: who is or will be the last star (i.e., most recent date of birth) to have been born within the old Soviet empire? Sebastian Stan is a contender, but I think it will be Milanya Vayntrub. She's not quite a "star" yet, but I think she'll get there.

She's a really funny, interesting actress, known best for a series of ads for AT&T a few years ago that I would assume haven't been widely seen in the UK. She recently returned to do some AT&T ads this year, and had a great response to internet creeps:

She's also the voice of Marvel's Squirrel Girl in animation, and in a live action pilot for a superhero team series that was a casualty of Disney/Marvel internal politics.

I also saw her in "Other Space," a Paul Feig-produced SF comedy series about an asteroid survey ship that ends up making Earth's first contact with aliens. It's a concept I always wanted to see - Star Trek always shows us the "best of the best," but even Starfleet has to have a 90th percentile, so what are *those* guys up to?

It has one of my favorite bits from any SF show. The ship has to hide from hostile aliens and "runs silent," turning off all electronics except life support to avoid detection. With some funny results, like medical devices people rely on no longer working. And Vayntrub's character, who like her real life self, was born in Uzbekistan.... So English is the official working language of Earth's space fleet. But it turns out her character was too lazy to actually learn English as required, and has been relying on the universal translator forever, so nobody can communicate with her.

Really good show, and while funny, it also had a lot of good "serious" SF ideas too (not unlike The Orville in its approach.) Unfortunately, it aired on Yahoo's video streaming service, and I assume 95% of the people who were aware that Yahoo is still a thing were spending all their time trying to reach Netscape tech support to fix their AltaVista searches, and it took too long for their modems to download videos from Yahoo.

Ah, I heard about her response to the body-shaming. She seems really cool. I remember hearing about *Other Space* because MST3K's Joel Hodgson was in it -- I'll have to see if I can find to watch somewhere.

No, AT&T has no presence in the UK, so I've never seen those ads.
