weekly digest: a relentless ticking-clock thriller (on screens and in my head)
the little bit that happened at Flick Filosopher from Monday, February 27, to Sunday, March 5
Fuck, the Oscars are next weekend. I have so much work to do — films to see and so many reviews to write — and a brain that does not want to get into gear.
I’m sorry I’m complaining again. I hate hearing myself complain, and I hate that it feels like the most proactive thing I can do at the moment. The limitations on my life at the moment, while I wait for hip-replacement surgery, are driving me crazy. This is worse than the lockdowns from early in the pandemic, because I could then at least get out for some fresh air and a long, stress-reducing walk. I feel like I haven’t properly grieved my mother’s death, because I’m so wrapped up in myself. I have serious thinking to do to figure out what the heck I am doing with my life, because nothing is really working for me, and I am terrified about what the future holds.
And I am in no state of mind to deal with any of this. Constant pain is not only, you know, painful, but also distracting and depressing.
I am trying to be kind with myself, and trying to stay hopeful, but everything just feels impossible at the moment.
So that’s where I’m at…

Full Time (À plein temps) movie review: mother of invention [pictured]
This relentless, heart-in-your-throat, ticking-clock thriller about precarious single-motherhood could not be more timely or more intimate. As real, and as recognizably stressful, as the genre gets. [read the review | US cinemas now; UK cinemas May]
loaded question: if you could have a Lego set of anything, what would it be?
Of course there are many many Lego sets dedicated to pop culture. But don’t feel like you must limit yourself to pop culture. Go to town… [reply at Flick Filosopher | reply at Substack | reply at Patreon]
what I’m bingeing
The Mandalorian [Disney+ globally]: S3 has arrived, and honestly I would just watch Mando and the kid fly around the galaxy sightseeing or whatever
The Last of Us [HBO Max US, Sky/Now UK]: incredible pas de deux episode last week with Bella Ramsey and Storm Reid; I almost forgot that Pedro Pascal barely appeared…
Old Enough! [Netflix globally]: still cute
Picard [Paramount+ US (via Prime)/Prime UK]: yup, looks like I will enjoying this purely for the nostalgia, though it’s also great to hear the the Next Gen characters swearing; Trek has always suffered from a lack of good honest cussing
