weekly digest: a week later and reviews short
the very little that happened at Flick Filosopher from Monday, May 8, to Sunday, May 14 (and a couple of stragglers from the week before)
I continue to struggle to get my brain into gear. My head is full of things to say, but my body just goes: Eh, why not take a nap. Not a literal nap, more a zone-out, space-out mental snooze. I’ve never felt less like myself than I do right now, and I hate it.
I hope an end to this is in sight: my surgery is next week. I’ll write a little more about that in a few days, but I really really hope that once my body feels like my old self again my head will start to feel that way again, too.

loaded question: what movies and/or TV series have standout opening credits?
I’m expanding the scope of our earlier discussion of this topic, a decade ago, because TV opening credits seem to have come back into style in recent years… [reply at Flick Filosopher | reply at Substack | reply at Patreon]
and two leftovers from the week before (for which I did not send a Weekly Digest, sorry)
What’s Love Got to Do with It? movie review: the boy next door, and a world away
Lily James and Shazad Latif? Delightful, even when they’re not together and sparking. No surprise where they’re going, but this amiable rom-com gets them there with genuine smarts and real sentiment. [read the review | cinemas US; cinemas/VOD UK]
loaded question: what are the cheeriest, happiest movies you’ve ever seen?
The first one that comes to mind for me is the utterly delightful Legally Blonde. Its protagonist, Elle Woods, is surely one of the sweetest, kindest characters ever to feature in her own movie. [reply at Flick Filosopher | reply at Substack | reply at Patreon]
what I’m watching and bingeing
Silo [Apple TV+ globally]: I’ve read the sci-fi book series by Hugh Howey that this is based on, and I adore it, but even so, I was not prepared for how good this is; episode 3 is so incredibly gripping I had to remember to breathe…
For All Mankind [Apple TV+ globally]: I finally got around to starting this alt-history series — about what might have happened if the space race between the USA and the USSR hadn’t ended — and I love it; binged my way through 2019’s Season 1, now I’m onto Season 2; Joel Kinnaman as one of the NASA astronauts is the best he’s ever been (and he’s always been really good)
The Power [Prime US/Prime UK/and globally]: we’re starting to see how the world is changing now that women are no longer afraid of men, and I am loving it
Old Enough! [Netflix globally]: still have not gotten back to this, I’m a terrible person
